Focus on Education 2018
Next to unconditional parental love and quality family time, your child must have a well-balanced education to be successful in today's challenging world. Even at the pre-school level, parents are shopping for programs that best suit the needs of their children. Many parents are looking outside the public school system in search of smaller classrooms, language immersion, religious and cultural training, greater discipline, experienced, enthusiastic motivating, teachers and a variety of extracurricular activities. Public school systems are realizing that to keep their students and attract new ones, they too must offer specialized programs. Ensuring that your child's school experience is a positive one starting from the pre-school years should be every parent's priority!
Here are some suggestions to consider when school shopping:
- How many children in a classroom?
- Is there an active parent council?
- Is the environment clean, safe and well maintained?
- Does the staff (principal, teachers and office staff seem friendly and helpful?
- Are the halls filled with the works of the students?
- Do the teachers speak to the children respectfully?
- How are children disciplined for unacceptable behaviour?
- Is the library busy and well stocked?
- Do you see parents volunteering in the classrooms?
- Is there a modern computer and science lab?
- Are there a variety of extracurricular clubs and sports programs?
- Be assertive and detail your child's personality when you go to an interview.
Write down all the answers given so that you can go home and compare notes.

ENRICHED AND SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION
Manitoba Catholic Schools
Catholic schools offer a unique environment in which a balanced education
is provided in the context of a caring Christian community. Our values, which
are formed according to the Christian faith and the Catholic tradition, permeate every aspect of school life. A child's spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional needs are attended through a program that places an emphasis on both academic achievement and character formation. Students are challenged to develop their gifts so they may put their lives at the service of God and of the community.
Catholic schools adhere to the academic curriculum prescribed by Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning. Teachers are provincially certified and maintain a high academic standard which fosters the development of skills which allow students to become independent learners.
Catholic schools offer a safe and structured environment. Attendance is monitored, age and grade appropriate homework is assigned and parents are
kept informed about their child's progress. Our schools respect parents as the
primary educators of their children. Our mission is to assist parent in carrying out their solemn duty to promote the growth and welfare of their children.
The Manitoba Federation of Independent Schools
The Manitoba Federation of Independent Schools
Choosing the right school for your children is no easy task, but it could be the most important decision you make this year! The Manitoba Federation of Independent Schools (MFIS) can help. The mission of MFIS is "To support and encourage high educational standards and the values unique to our various school communities and to represent the interest and concerns of independent schools in Manitoba." MFIS represents a community of schools that share a common commitment to parental choice, diversity, and excellence in education. Currently 50 of Manitoba's funded independent schools are members of MFIS. Member schools reflect the diversity of the Manitoba population: Alliance, Anglican, Baptist, Canadian Reformed, Catholic, Christian, Hutterite, Islamic, Jewish, Lutheran, Mennonite, Seventh-Day Adventist, Sikh, Interdenominational and non-faith based. Collectively, these schools currently serve approximately 14,000 students and their families.
The member schools of MFIS value the pursuit of excellence for the students we
serve. Our schools strive to encourage all aspects of our students' intellectual
and personal capabilities by providing challenging learning environments where
students strive to reach their full potential as individuals and as contributing
members of society. We know that parents are looking for schools that foster and
provide their children with the kind of critical thinking, creativity, and persistence required for future success. In today's rapidly changing society with its complex challenges it is more important than ever to also provide our students with a solid ethical and moral footing to help guide them throughout their lives. Our member schools strive to see our students well prepared for the very different future that awaits them where they will help to contribute to the common good.
At MFIS we believe that we can strengthen the educational system in Manitoba by
promoting parental choice, diversity and excellence. Find the independent schools and explore open houses in your eighbourhood by visiting the MFIS website.
Casa Montessori & Orff Elementary School
If your dreams include a child who really loves school, is an independent and creative thinker, and who thinks and cares about others, then you are certainly doing the right thing by giving your child the gift
of a Montessori education.
In 1991, five Winnipeg Montessori teachers conceived the unique idea of merging
the Montessori principles of education with the Orff method of teaching music.
Their vision, in the spirit of both Maria Montessori and Carl Orff's philosophies, was to create an environment that would touch the imagination of the child and stimulate learning in a creative and independent environment. And so began the journey of Casa Montessori and Orff School from a pre-school program for 2-6 year olds to the addition in 2008 of the first and only recognized Elementary Montessori program in Winnipeg. The Elementary program
is highly enriched and challenging. Children have the opportunity to learn absolutely amazing things in an independent and creative environment. There are three main components in the program: The first is the Mastery of Fundamental Skills and acquisition of basic knowledge found in a traditional curriculum including math, language, geography, botany, zoology, history, art, geometry, physics, chemistry, French, and music.
The Great Stories are the second component. They are presented as inspiring
stories and include the story of how the world began, the development of
plant and animal life on earth, the story of humankind, the history of language,
math and technology. They are intended to give children a perspective of the Earth we live in and humanity's place within the universe. The third component is Individual Chosen Research. Students gather information, assemble projects and share whatthey have learnt with their fellow classmates. Their oral presentation and written research reports grow in sophistication and
complexity over the years.
Learning continues to be a hands-on experience and the Montessori materials that
were used in the pre-school classrooms are used in an even more sophisticated manner. The unique peace curriculum enables the development of a small community
in which children learn to work together, become involved in charities and community service projects and ultimately prepare students for life.
A student's Elementary education culminates with an amazing experience at
the Montessori Model United Nations in New York. Students step into the shoes of
Ambassadors of other countries, debate international issues, negotiate and resolve conflicts while navigating the UN's rules procedures.
The schools will be hosting an Information Session on February 12th, 2018. Please visit our website and our facebook page for more information.

Balmoral Hall School
Discovery, it turns out, is STEAM-powered.
At Balmoral Hall School, girls' learning science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) begins in the early years.
Kindergarten teacher Arda Thomson takes a multidisciplinary approach to teaching so that her students grow to love learning right from the start. For example,
in the unit " How We Organize Ourselves," a JENGA® like game is used not only to show the interconnectedness of jobs at the school, but also introduces the students to engineering concepts. Guest speakers from the medical profession further the understanding of this concept, by discussing how the body systems rely on one other to maintain good health.
Beyond the classroom, they are active participants in the Tomatosphere™ project led by the Canada Space Agency (CSA). The girls love planting the seeds provided by the CSA, observing their growth, and guessing which of the seeds spent time in space. The findings are reported the CSA. BH girls are proud of their contributions to science!
These extraordinary five-year-olds also take on the role of teacher each week. The weekly show and teach program is a platform that allows the students to research STEAM topics, and to present them to their classmates. This is a great exercise, that develops confidence, public speaking skills, and the ability to organize one's thoughts, says Mrs. Thomson.
Learn more about Balmoral Hall School's promise of discovery at the open house
on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 1 - 5 p.m. at 630 Westminster Ave. in Winnipeg.

Reading and Mathematics are the two subject areas that predict high school success. Here are some tools to enrich and stimulate your child in elementary school.
Start by learning the sounds of the alphabet: leave the names of the letter for later, when they will be used for spelling. When reading, focus on sounds and on sounding out. A child who cannot sound out new words will feel overwhelmed and resentful if they have to memorize sight words and entire books by rote.
When kids feel confident in their ability to sound out words, sight words become easier to take on, since the vast majority can be sounded out. For every 'tough' word there are a dozen easy words like "best" and "drink."
If your child continues to guess wildly based on the first and last letters of the word, suggest that the rule for guessing is to try it after two attempts to sound out. Sometimes a child will sound out the letters properly and then guess something using a totally different sound set. In this case, have them 'sing' the sounds so that they connect better. Instead of "d" "r" "I" "n" "k", have them try to hold the sounds as if they were singing "duhrrrriiiinnnnk."
When it comes to math, focus on repetition. The current approach to math in school is great for developing concept understanding, but to move forward, knowledge needs to be present as well. Start with learning to count to 100. Do it every day and celebrate how high your three-year-old can count. For addition
and multiplication facts, do not be afraid to use flashcards in a mood of fun. Keep it quick: no more than 5 or 10 minutes of drill at a time. Schedule a few minutes daily for several weeks to increase addition or multiplication knowledge. Keep in mind that the goal is instant recall, so keep working on cards that take a few moments to figure out and retire those that are instantaneous. Some games like Yahtzee, Cribbage, and Monopoly are natural developers of basic addition facts. You can adapt a game like War to develop addition and multiplication by dealing two cards at a time. Players add or multiply the values and the larger sum or product wins. Don't forget that children enjoy games they win. You do not have to be a cardsharp to make that happen. No matter how you are helping your child learn, make sure that it is pleasant, celebratory, and positive. Reading and math will be fun if your child is having fun learning.

Partners for Learning
Partners for Learning is owned and operated by Louise Carson, a certified reading clinician, who has over 30 years of experience working with both students and educators. Students are assessed by Louise who then designs and supervises each instructional program. A student works individually with one of the certified teachers on staff, each having an area of teaching specialty.
Tutoring takes place Mondays through Thursdays after school during the school year. Summer tutoring is very popular as this is the only time when a student with problems can narrow the gap while the rest of the class isn't actively learning. Tutoring is available during July and August. As well, there are numerous options for small groups and clinics during August which focus on reading, writing, spelling, math and study skills.
Partners for Learning is celebrating 30 years of helping children become successful independent learners. 1988 -2018. For further information call 204-475-2199.
Sylvan Learning South Winnipeg
Our south Winnipeg Sylvan has served students for over thirty years offering professionally crafted programs administered by caring, committed teachers under the direction of the same long-term owner. Our core programs in reading, math, study skills and writing are the foundation programs, still building on basic skills and now offered with new innovative technology. But we know that to grow we must be truly forward thinking, so we've stepped into the future with some relevant and fun learning programs for today's students.
Kids love our Robotics course where they get to create unique programmable robots. They get so excited when their creation comes to life. It's a small step into the world of tomorrow! In Coding our students learn the basics using blocks of code. They develop some of the logic of coding in a hands-on, step by step process. They learn in small groups, with an experienced instructor, in a cooperative, positive atmosphere.
And finally, we now offer Math and Algebra Edge, our newest technology based program where students can practice and review skills at their own pace, with support from a trained instructor. These Edge programs can be combined with "homework help".
