I hope you are having a great summer so far! August is a month of family fun with tons of things to do in and around Winnipeg. Festivals take place in Winnipeg, and in small towns throughout Manitoba. Check out our packed Family Fun Calendar and take a day trip to a rural festival like Gimli's Icelandic Festival or Morden's Corn and Apple Festival.
August is outdoor movie month so check out the article in this issue to mark the movies you want to take the family to in Memorial Park or Assiniboine Park. Why not tour the world with your family by visiting the many pavilions of Folklorama? Make a list of things to do and see if you can get through all of them this month. Visit the Children's Museum and take in the new Castle Builders exhibit. Spend time at the Manitoba Museum checking out the re-opened NonSuch Gallery and see the new Hockey exhibit. Have you been to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights? Visit the Forks, the Zoo, Birdshill Park, Winnipeg Beach, Gimli or Grand Beach. Why not camp in the backyard? Take in a play at Rainbow Stage or free outdoor concert downtown, on Corydon Avenue or at the Forks. There are so many free things to do this month!
I want to remind you to make sure your family stays safe this summer. Emergency rooms are packed with kids and adults with broken limbs, rashes, sun stroke and worse. Always think safety and make sure you keep an eye on your kids especially around pools and beaches. Every summer we are saddened by accidental drownings of both adults and children. Keep everyone safe by always accessing the risk in your families activities and ensuring that all precautions are taken to make activities fun yet safe.
When August arrives, it is inevitable to start thinking about all the things you must do before the kids head back to school in 5 or 6 weeks. Successful parenting is about planning so make this August the month you are so organized that there is no scramble and stress when September comes. I know parents that do their school supply shopping in July and they do it leisurely without stress. Take inventory of your kids' supplies lunch boxes and backpacks from last year and see what needs to be replaced. Do your kids need new shoes or clothes because they grew over the summer? How about registering them for after school or weekend activities? Make sure you know registration dates so you don't miss out.
Yes, August will go by too quickly with so much to do but try to slow it down and really enjoy time with the family exploring what our city and province have to offer.
Take Care & Have a Fun August!
