February is a Fabulous month! We have made it through the long cold month of January with its post holiday blues but we are now moving forward toward spring! Days are getting longer and when the sun shines, our city is a beautiful, white wonderland of winter fun! February is I Love to Read Month. Why not pick a family book to read together and make the time at breakfast, dinner or in the evening to take turns reading to each other? It is a proven fact that if parents love to read, then it is likely that their children will also develop a love of reading. It does not matter what you read, as long as you find something you love to read. Kids may enjoy reading comic books or sports books, the newspaper or reading instructions to build Lego. Head to your local library branch and take out books on topics your children are interested in. Check out the great article on tips to build family literacy.
This is our Focus on Education issue and we offer a guide to learn about the many educational options from pre-school to high school. We have great public and private schools in our city and province and parent's can attend open houses to learn more about school programs. Come to the open house with a check list of questions to compare schools. There are also many after school educational support programs that offer tutoring or supplement and advance children's knowledge.
It is important for parents to be involved in their children's education and volunteering at your children's school is a great way to be connected and get an insider's view. If your child struggles in school, don't wait. Trust your intuition if your child seems unhappy and get help as soon as you can. Talk to teachers, administration and school guidance councillor to learn about the support they can offer.
February is also a month with tons of family fun. Get outside and enjoy activities at The Zoo, the Forks, Fort Whyte or at your local community centre's winter carnival. Go skating, walking, cross country skiing, downhill skiing or tobogganing. It is also time for Festival du Voyageur, our city's wonderful 10 day French winter outdoor festival in St. Boniface.
Have a great February!
