Fabulous February is here, and this issue is our first for 2023, and the third celebrating our 30th year of publishing! I am proud and grateful to have been helping families, caregivers and educators get the information they need to raise children and live their best family life in Winnipeg and Manitoba. In 30 years, I have seen so many businesses, events and programs come and go but some have been with us since the beginning. We are seeing a resurgence in family-friendly businesses, organizations and events which is very exciting. Winnipeg is a wonderful, affordable, perfect sized city to raise a family! We have big city school systems, museums, theatre, sports and recreation but we don’t have to spend hours in traffic. That’s the WIN in WINNIPEG!
January is my least favourite month, mostly because it is long, cold, snowy and dark but this year it was surprisingly mild and pleasant with no big snow events. Some days were spectacular with beautiful hoar-frosted trees that took your breathe away. This is “Winterpeg” at it’s finest. Families walking, skating, tobogganing and cross-country skiing at local parks, community centres, forests and The Forks. The River Trail is open now. Take your family and enjoy the view of our city from the centre of the Red or Assiniboine River and enjoy the warming huts and ice creations along the way. So many of us are struggling with stress and anxiety these days, but an outdoor walk is a great way to life your spirits and walking with others, smiling, laughing and forgetting troubles for short time is truly cathartic.
This issue features our Focus on Education feature so if you are school shopping, please review this section to learn more pre-school to high school programs offered. Check out in-person or virtual open house dates and visit those that interest you for your children. Our city schools offer many options from public to private and specialty programs for art, music, sports, technology, special needs etc. Start your child’s education off with the pre-school program that best suits your child’s learning style.
This issue also offers plenty of February Family Fun ideas to plan your month. Our calendar is packed events like Festival du Voyageur, A Dinosaur Tale, Monster Trucks, MTYP plays, Farmer’s Markets and more. Some of the best winter activities are FREE so get outside as a family for a walk of to build a snowman or snow fort.
Happy Valentine’s Day & Happy Louis Riel Day!
