Celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Days!

Warm up this winter with a visit to one of Winnipeg Public Library’s 20 branches. There are many benefits to visiting the library with your family. Participating in early literacy programs (which feature interactive stories, songs, and rhymes) helps your build your young child’s pre-reading skills. Baby Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, and Family Story Time all include tips to help families create a literacy-rich home environment. These programs run in fall, winter, and spring.

In February, join us to celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Days, with each library branch hosting a special drop-in musical performance for families. This is a great time to register your child for their very own children’s card. The full schedule of performances and programs can be found online at winnipeg.ca/library or contact any local library branch for more information.

If you’re looking for something to do this spring break, there will be programming for school age children and families at each library branch.

In the summer it’s time for the TD Summer Reading Club, with programs for children of all ages. Children can receive a free bilingual reading kit with activities and a calendar to track their reading. Pre-readers can also join the club by being read to by their parents, siblings, or caregivers. Research shows children who participate in summer reading clubs increase their reading comprehension and enjoyment, better preparing them to return to school in the fall.

Teens can participate in the Teen Summer Challenge by picking up a bilingual challenge card from any library branch or downloading it from the website. For each challenge they complete, they will receive a ballot from library staff to enter a prize draw.

In addition to programs and special events, the library also has a diverse collection of materials including large print and braille books, audiobooks on CD and MP3 CD, and DAISY audiobooks. Your library card also provides access to a large online collection of eBooks and eAudiobooks. Staff are always happy to help you find what you are looking for. In addition to books in English and French, the library has books for children in more than 20 languages, including dual language books with text in English and another language.

With something for every member of your family, Winnipeg Public Library is a great place to visit all year long.
