Welcome to Summer – May Long Weekend is Here!

May long weekend is the unofficial start of summer in Manitoba. Whether it’s a sunny +34°C or a chilly -2°C with rain or snow, this weekend marks the season’s arrival. Tradition tells us not to plant our gardens until after May long, but with the recent warm weather and garden centres overflowing with fresh blooms, it’s hard to resist the urge to dig in.

As temperatures rise, so does the excitement for all the outdoor adventures summer has to offer. In this issue of The SCOOP, we’re here to help you make the most of it:

  • It’s not too late to register for a wide variety of summer camps. Checkout our Spring 2025 issue of Winnipeg Parent for a complete guide.

  • There’s still time to sign up for a family-friendly walk supporting a great cause.

  • Remember to include yourself in family photos – you’re part of the memories too!

  • Getting off the couch and staying active isn’t just good for your health – it also sets a positive example for your kids.

So lace up your walking shoes, get your hands a little dirty, and soak up the sun. Summer is just getting started!

Warm regards,

A Letter to Adults to be More Active

Winnipeg Parent received the following letter from a reader and grade 5 student from Balmoral Hall School.

Have you not got off the couch in two days? Do you want your children to look up to you? Well, you need to be a good role model! Adults should be active because their children will look up to them. An active family leads to having better physical health, has positive impacts on mental health, and did you know your sleep will improve too? Being active is better for your family’s overall well-being! (Read more)
